LIVE AND WORK IN CANADA

International Experience Canada is the flagship route for younger British citizens: live in Canada, work legally, and build experience that can matter later. It is a permit to work and travel — not a promise of permanent residence, and never a job placement.

Led by the Team of Sean G McKinsley and Kimberly J White, Regulated Canadian Immigration Consultants (RCICs): Sean G McKinsley, RCIC, CICC R529731 · Kimberly J White, RCIC, CICC R712483.

The three categories

Working Holiday is for travel funded by temporary paid work, without a job offer first. Young Professionals requires a qualifying offer that develops you professionally, on an employer-specific permit. International Co-op is for enrolled students whose Canadian placement forms part of their studies. Choosing well matters: each category carries different evidence, conditions and planning consequences.

Before you enter a pool

Work through eligibility and documents first: whether you have used IEC before, what money you must show on arrival, insurance for your entire stay, police certificates from your residence history, and the documents a border officer will ask for. Season timing sits outside this page on purpose — always confirm the current position on the official IEC pages named below rather than relying on anyone's summary, including ours.

Arrival is a decision point

A port-of-entry letter does not promise entry or a permit. Bring your passport, letter, insurance proof, funds proof and departure arrangements, and read the printed permit before you leave the airport — its dates and conditions are what authorise your work.

FAQ

Which IEC categories are available to British citizens?

It depends on your situation — Working Holiday, Young Professionals and International Co-op (Internship) are listed for British citizens, each with different evidence and permit conditions.

Is UK IEC one three-year Canadian work permit?

No. It is separate participations with separate permits and maximums, each assessed on its own. Check the official page above before planning around lengths.

Do I need health insurance for the whole of my IEC stay?

Yes — cover for medical care, hospitalisation and repatriation for your whole stay, in place for entry. Check the official page: canada.ca/en/immigration-refugees-citizenship/services/work-canada/iec/prepare-arrival.html

What everyday costs look like on both sides of the Atlantic

People planning a move from the UK to Canada often ask a deceptively simple question: will life cost less there? There is no single answer. A one-bedroom flat in central Toronto and a house in a smaller Alberta community are different propositions, just as London and Manchester are. This page sets the same cost categories side by side for a small set of UK and Canadian cities, using published sources with their reference periods shown. Where the sources differ in coverage or reference period, we say so, so you can compare categories with those differences in view — and see where the gaps in the evidence are.

Costs are only one part of a move, and a cheaper city does not make an immigration route available or an application succeed. Treat these figures as background for your own planning, alongside the route, work and family questions covered elsewhere on this site.

Comparability flags: the Canadian rent measure (CMHC) and the UK rent measure (ONS) are NOT like-for-like — CMHC covers private row (townhouse) and apartment structures with at least three rental units; ONS covers all private tenancies. Scottish rent data, including Lothian, are mainly for advertised new lets. Reference periods differ — CMHC October 2025 vs ONS August 2026. Figures sit side by side in their own currencies, unconverted; compare categories, not totals. Edinburgh rent is labelled "Lothian (incl. Edinburgh)" (ONS Lothian Broad Rental Market Area, not the city of Edinburgh). CMA means census metropolitan area and CA means census agglomeration, the Statistics Canada 2021 Census urban-area definitions that CMHC uses for these tables: a CMA has a total population of at least 100,000, and a CA has a core population of at least 10,000.

Food basics — no city-level comparison

This comparison does not include a verified, comparable city grocery basket for the UK and Canadian cities shown, so no food prices are compared here. As context only, UK food and non-alcoholic beverage prices rose 1.3% in the 12 months to August 2026 (ONS CPIH, August 2026); that is an inflation rate, not a price level. The official Canadian grocery prices used here are national and provincial, not by city, so no city food figure is shown for Canada either.

Utilities — no city-level comparison

Canadian city utilities are not compared here because a verified, dated city-level bundle is not available in the sources used. CMHC rent may already include heat/hydro in some units, so adding a utility figure risks double-counting. The Ofgem price cap is GB-wide and based on a typical household; it is not a city figure and is not included in this city table.

UK-only house prices (clearly UK-only — no Canadian comparison)

This comparison does not include Canadian city house prices. This panel is UK-only: it compares UK cities with each other and says nothing about Canadian house prices. UK only (UK House Price Index, July 2026 provisional, mean, GBP): London £550,000 · Manchester £252,000 · Edinburgh £304,000.

Currency and conversion

No currency-converted figures appear in this feature. GBP and CAD are shown side by side, each in its own currency, unconverted. Compare categories (for example, the 2-bed rent category here against the same category elsewhere, remembering that the rent measures, coverage and reference periods differ) rather than adding figures into totals or treating the numbers as directly equivalent amounts of money.
